Chelsea buns

This plump, fruit-filled bun has been around since the 18th century, and there’s a reason it remains popular to this day. Try our cranberry version of this English institution.

Ingredients:

¾ cup warm milk

14g dry yeast

¼ cup caster sugar

3 ½ cups plain flour

1 teaspoon salt

60g butter, chopped

2 eggs, lightly beaten

1 ½ cups dried cranberries

⅓ cup brown sugar

1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon

1 orange rind, finely grated

70g butter, softened

Method:

Whisk together the milk, yeast, and two teaspoons of the caster sugar. Leave aside in a warm place for about 10 minutes, until frothy.

Into a large bowl, sift the flour then stir in the salt and remaining caster sugar.

Use your fingertips to rub the chopped butter into the flour mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Add the milk mixture and eggs and stir until combined. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth (around 10 minutes).

Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and set aside in a warm place for at least 40 minutes, or until doubled in size.

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out into a rectangle of about 30cm by 35cm. Set aside two teaspoons of the softened butter and spread the rest over the dough.

In a bowl, combine the cranberries brown sugar, cinnamon, and orange rind. Spread this mixture evenly over the buttered dough.

Roll the dough from the longer side. Cut into three-cm-thick slices and place into a greased a 20 to 25cm cake tin or baking dish. Be sure to leave a little room between each bun. Set the buns aside for about 20 minutes to rise.

Preheat your oven to 200°C and spread the remaining softened butter over the buns.

Bake buns for two to 25 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and cooked through. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before moving to a wire rack to cool completely.

Images: Shutterstock

Bill Clinton reveals why he had an affair with Monica Lewinsky

Bill Clinton claims that his affair with Monica Lewinsky was one of the “things I did to manage my anxieties”.

In a tell-all documentary, the former President revealed that the reason behind his affair with the ex-White House intern while he was in office was because it helped him with issues he was dealing with at the time.

Bill said that at the time he met Lewinsky, the pressure of the job made him feel like a boxer who had done 30 rounds and he looked at Lewinsky as “something that will take your mind off it for a little while”.

He makes the claims in an interview featured in the new documentary series about his wife Hillary Clinton, called Hillary, where the former First Lady and Secretary of State candidly reveals that in the aftermath of the scandal the couple underwent “painful” marriage counselling.

Bill apologised to Lewinsky in the documentary that is set to premiere on Friday and says he felt “terrible” that her life was defined by the affair.

But he said that at some point when things don’t return to normal "you’ve got to decide how to define normal", suggesting the former intern should just move on.

The scandal resulted in Bill being impeached in 1998. But he survived the trial in the Senate and remained in office during his second term.

His hand was forced in 1998 when it became clear that he had lied to a grand jury which was investigating his personal affairs by denying the affair.

Bill had also lied to Hillary, and she believed him.

He said in the interview: “I went and sat on the bed and talked to her. I told her exactly what happened, when it happened. I said I feel terrible about it. We’ve been through quite a bit in the last few years. I said I have no defence, it’s inexcusable what I did”.

Hillary told the cameras: “I was just devastated. I could not believe it. I was so personally just hurt and I can’t believe this, I can’t believe you lied.”

Hillary then told her husband that he was the one who had to come clean to their daughter Chelsea, who was 18 at the time. He said it was worse than telling his wife and he said that doing so was “awful”.

Hillary Clinton says the gutsiest thing she ever did was stay with Bill after Monica Lewinsky scandal

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has revealed that continuing her marriage with her husband Bill Clinton after his affair was the “gutsiest” thing she’s ever done.

Clinton made the candid statement during an appearance on Good Morning America, where she sat alongside her daughter Chelsea to promote their new book The Book of Gutsy Women: Favourite Stories of Courage and Resilience.

When asked about her own “gutsy moments” throughout her career, Clinton didn’t hold back saying that it was standing by her husband after the 1998 cheating scandal that she considers her most courageous moment.

“I think the gutsiest thing I’ve ever done – well, personally – was make the decision to stay in my marriage,” she said.

Chelsea was taken aback by her mother’s comments, telling hosts: “I think I’m so overwhelmed by my mother’s answer that I’m a bit out of words. I’m so proud to be her daughter.”

In 1988 a scandal broke out after it was revealed that the then US President Bill Clinton took part in a sexual relationship with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky, who was only 22 at the time.

The news came as a shock to the First Lady and the American public, who were disgusted that the leader of the free world was sleeping with an employee almost 30 years his junior.

Despite the betrayal, Hillary decided to stick by Bill’s side even as he went through multiple trials and faced major public scrutiny.

He was later acquitted and allowed to remain in office, but the incident took a toll on both their personal and political lives.

Hillary and Bill Clinton give rare glimpse inside their not so humble abode

Hillary Clinton has given Architectural Design a tour of the home she shares with husband Bill Clinton, which is a 510 square metre Neo-Georgian red brick house in Washington, D.C.

The house was built in 1951 and is called ‘Whitehaven’ because it sits on a street of the same name.

Hillary came across the house in 2000, which was the last year of her husband’s US presidency.

"It was an emotional reaction," she told the magazine.

"When I was elected to the Senate in 2000, I knew that I needed a place to live while we were in session during the year. So I began looking.

"I had an experience in this house, which was just emotional."

However, the house required extensive renovations according to the interior designer who worked with Hillary on the project from 2003 to 2006.

“The mandate was to bring more light and to create more physical space for sitting and relaxing,” says Rosemarie Howe, the interior designer who worked with Hillary on the project.

“We also wanted to open the house and all of its interior rooms to this beautiful back garden.”

Howe also shared her thoughts on the bathrooms and the kitchen.

“It was kind of this Ozzie and Harriet house and it had never been updated. The bathrooms were sort of '50s.

"The kitchen was functional but very outdated, too. The people who had lived there before were very tall, so counters and things were quite high.”

Renovating the house was a family affair for the Clintons as Hillary’s mother Dorothy Rodham helped her daughter as well as the interior designer.

“It was a joy working with my mom and Rosemarie,” said Hillary.

“Both my mother and I love colour, and you can see, we have a lot of colour in the house that came from our collaboration.”

Scroll through the gallery above to see inside Hillary and Bill Clinton's home.

While speaking about her husband’s presidential affair with then-22-year-old Monic Lewinsky, Hillary Clinton provided an unexpected answer.

During an interview with Sunday Morning in the US, Mrs Clinton claimed that Bill Clinton’s affair wasn’t an abuse of power because Lewinsky “was an adult”.

The response of the former First Lady was surprising considering her passion for championing gender equality and that her 2016 presidential campaign focused on her becoming the first female president if elected.

When asked if her husband should’ve resigned the presidency after the affair was exposed, Mrs Clinton replied: “Absolutely not”.

Pressed on whether it had been an abuse of power, as the president couldn’t have a consensual relationship with an intern, Mrs Clinton held her stance, reiterating that Lewinsky was old enough at the time.

Mr Clinton was 49 years old when the affair took place.

Mrs Clinton then focused on President Donald Trump, who has been accused of sexually assaulting several women before the 2016 election.

“Let me ask you this: Where’s the investigation of the current incumbent, against whom numerous allegations have been made and which he dismisses, denies and ridicules?” Mrs Clinton said.

Regarding her husband’s affair, she said: “So there was an investigation, and it — as I believe — came out in the right place.”

The US House voted to impeach Mr Clinton for an obstruction of justice and lying under oath, however, the US Senate later acquitted him and he remained as president.

Despite the spotlight that has been placed on sexual misconduct with campaigns such as #MeToo, Mrs Clinton believes sexism is still rampant in politics.

Mrs Clinton believes sexism, as well as the investigation into her e-mails and Russian election meddling, were the reasons for her loss to Mr Trump.

“If you watched the way Trump debated me, it was just imbued with sexism. Making fun of me for preparing. Well, you know, that’s the old, like, ‘Oh, yeah, the girl in the class who’s always prepared. I don’t need to be prepared,’” Mrs Clinton said.

During the 2016 election, Access Hollywood leaked a damning video where Mr Trump could be heard bragging about grabbing women’s genitalia.

Mr Trump responded to the footage by holding a press conference with several women who accused Mr Clinton of sexual misconduct and accused Mrs Clinton of trying to silence them.

However, Mrs Clinton said she played “no role” in silencing the women who accused her husband.

“No role,” Mrs Clinton said. “I take responsibility for my life and my actions.”

"She doesn't get it": Leigh Sales' painful interview with Hillary Clinton

While completing her Australian tour, Hillary Clinton sat down with 7.30 host Leigh Sales to discuss losing the 2016 election to Donald Trump.

Hillary Clinton is currently completing a tour to promote her book about the election campaign titled “What Happened”.

In the interview, Clinton pinned her election defeat on various factors, including when former FBI director, James Comey, announced that the investigation into her emails had been reopened in the closing weeks of the 2016 election campaign.

“I have laid out in I think very persuasive evidence that his intervention on October 28 was the most important reason why I ended up losing 11 days later,” Clinton said.

“I don’t know why he treated me the way he did, and none of his explanations frankly hold water.

“His explanations as to how he treated me have never added up.

“There is no evidence as to why he did what he did to me.

“I don’t understand why he did what he did in 2016.”

Other targets of Clinton’s blame included “foreign interference”, fake news, “low information voters”, sexism and the electoral system itself.

“What I was up against was unprecedented. It really was a perfect storm,” she said.

Sales, whose questioning line was very tame up until that point, prodded Clinton further with her final question.

“There might be viewers watching who say: ‘Well, she seems to be in denial, because she’s saying it’s all external agents. What about her?’” Sales asked.

“Oh, I write in my book — read my book What Happened — you know I talk about the mistakes that I made, and I take responsibility for them. But I got three million more votes, and I got three million more votes because in general the American people actually agreed with my positions and what I intended to do as president,” she said.

“But in very targeted areas, I write about in the book how messages were specifically targeted towards voters in states that I ended up losing. That the intervention of Jim Comey at the end, something unprecedented and uncalled for, cost me a lot of points in places where I was leading until then.

“So, yes, I take responsibility and ultimately I was the name on the ballot so I am responsible for the fact that we didn’t succeed.”

Hillary Clinton forced to leave 9/11 memorial due to health scare

Hillary Clinton shocked attendees at a 9/11 memorial event just hours ago after collapsing and being forced to leave. The Democratic presidential candidate had to be helped into a van by her security team, barely able to stand up.

“Secretary Clinton attended the September 11th Commemoration Ceremony for just an hour and thirty minutes this morning to pay her respects and greet some of the families of the fallen,” a campaign spokesman said. “During the ceremony, she felt overheated, so departed to go to her daughter’s apartment and is feeling much better.”

This health scare comes at an unfortunate time in Clinton’s race for the White House, just weeks after Donald Trump called for her to release a current medical report, accusing her of lacking the “mental and physical stamina” necessary for the Oval Office.

In a recent letter detailing the state of her health, Clinton revealed she suffered a concussion four years ago as a result of a stomach virus, but has since returned to a full bill of health.

Update: Clinton's physician, Dr Lisa R. Bardack, has issued a statement revealing the presidential candidate is fighting pneumonia. "Secretary Clinton has been experiencing a cough related to allergies. On Friday, during follow up evaluation of her prolonged cough, she was diagnosed with pneumonia," she said. "She was put on antibiotics, and advised to rest and modify her schedule. While at this morning’s event, she became overheated and dehydrated. I have just examined her and she is now re-hydrated and recovering nicely."

Related links:

Watch the historic speech from Hillary Clinton’s 102-year-old supporter

Michelle Obama's moving speech at the Democratic convention

13-year-old stand-up comedian roasts Donald Trump

“First woman to First woman” Julia Gillard offers support to Hilary Clinton

In a touching gesture of female solidarity, Australia’s first and only female Prime minister, Julia Gilliard, has offered words of support to US democratic nominee Hilary Clinton.

The former labour leader wrote an open note to the presidential hopeful, urging her not to be dissuaded by sexism in politics and “the curious question of gender”.

The letter, written from the Democratic National Convention and published in The New York Times, also said “She knows what it’s like to be the subject of the stereotype that a powerful woman cannot be likable, that if she is commanding then she must be incapable of empathy.”

The 54-year-old also used the letter to highlight her tumultuous time as a leader in Australian politics 2011 though to 2013.

“When I was prime minister, I created a carbon-emissions trading program. The debate grew vicious, with the leader of the opposition attending a protest next to signs that described me as a witch”.

Ms Gillard also participated in a “Women in Leadership” forum at the DNC earlier this week in Philadelphia.

With Theresa May at the helm of Britain and Hilary Clinton in the running to clinch the US election, do you think we will see more female leaders the world over?
